Catalogue Note

Although Waagen was born in Memel, East Prussia (now Lithuania), he soon moved to Paris where he permanently settled to pursue a career as a sculptor. Inspired by the fashion for the oriental, he exhibited a number of works with North African themes at the Salon between 1861 and 1887, from his studio at 40, Cours-de-Vincennes. The Kabyle group of a Berber mountain tribesman with his hunting dogs was unquestionably his masterpiece and comparable to many of the finest examples of the genre.
