Catalogue Note

Visitors to the Salon of 1850 were surprised to find the athletic heroine of Greek legend in such an attitude of repose. The informality of the composition caused one critic to liken her to "a Parisienne leaving her bath". In Atalante Pradier has used a classical narrative as an opportunity for a frank and natural nude.
