Condition

Overall the condition of the bronze is good. There is dirt and wear to the patina consistent with age, including a few minor nicks and scratches. There are several small holes to the base, including two at the front. There is a minor stable crack running along the proper right side of the base. There are several spots of greening, particularly to the base. There are several slightly visible casting joints, including two around the proper right front and back paws, which are slightly open.

Catalogue Note

Alexander Phimister Proctor (1862-1950) was born in Ontario, Canada. He studied in New York at the National Academy of Design and Art Students League, before travelling to Paris where he worked under Denys Puech and Jean Injalbert. Proctor is best known for his animalier works, including a group of panthers for Brooklyn's Prospect Park and two bison heads for a fireplace at the White House, commissioned by Theodore Roosevelt.
