  • Vellum
6 leaves (including a bifolium), comprising (a) vast leaf from the Lives of the Saints, with the opening of the life of the fourth-century Pope St. Marcellus I, 473mm. by 360mm., with large white vine initial 'T' (opening "Tempore quo maximianus ...", Bibl. Hag. Lat., no.5235a) on blue, green and red grounds, 85mm. high, double column, with a single line of ornamental capitals touched in red, 59 lines in a fine early gothic hand, Italy (probably Tuscany), mid-twelfth century; (b) 2 fragments of leaves from a monumental Bible (parts of Numbers 29 and 31), remains of double column, 21 and 27 lines, Italy, eleventh century with twelfth-century revisions and addition of running title; (c) bifolium from St. Augustine on the Gospel of John (tractate 94), 560mm. by 400mm. in total, each leaf with remains of double column, 41 lines in a fine rounded early gothic hand, verso of first leaf much scuffed with remains of large initial 'C', Italy, twelfth century; (d) leaf from life of St. Paul, 445mm. by 235mm., with large initial 'C' in red (opening "Cum venissent Romam Lucas a galatia ...", Bibl. Hag. Lat., no.6570), double column, 32 lines in an excellent early gothic hand, initials touched in red, Italy, late twelfth century; all recovered from bindings and hence somewhat defective
