Catalogue Note

Although the artist He Qi appears to be unrecorded, the style of carving of this fan-frame suggests the strong influence of master ivory and wood carver Zhou Yi (1830-1920) with the probabiity that He was a student of his and belonged to his school.  For examples of Zhou Yi's work see a closely related boxwood fan-frame bearing his 'seared' inscription, sold at Huachen Auction, Beijing, 16th May 2004, lot 315; and an ivory fan-frame also signed by Zhou included in the exhibition Arts from the Scholar's Studio, Fung Ping Shan Museum, University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong, 1986, cat. no. 58.
