John Southern, Thorburn's Birds and Mammals, 1986, illus.p.78 (detail) and opposite
'As the sun slowly emerges above the distant hills, casting its welcome glow upon the Scottish hillsides, a pack of red grouse awakens, the old cock bird acknowledging both the break of day and a neighbouring pack of birds, incoming from adjoining heathery slopes.' (John Southern, Thorburn's Birds and Mammals, 1986, p.78)
The sheet is sound and has been laid down on artist's card.
The surface is in generally good overall condition with strong colours throughout. There are two tiny abrasions, one near the centre of the lower edge and one in the central foreground. There are a few tiny specks of possible staining in the sky and the upper half of the left and right edges are slightly discoloured.
