First edition, 3 volumes (2 volumes text and atlas), 4to (323 x 245mm.) and folio (590 x 410mm.), text volumes with 2 engraved frontispieces, one plate and 26 tail-pieces, atlas with 44 engraved plates, maps and charts, some folding, the 2 frontispieces and 35 maps and plates coloured by a modern hand, uniform contemporary mottled calf gilt, [Löwendahl 697; Cordier, Sinica 2381-3; Lust 545 & 547], some text leaves browned or spotted (mainly at end of vol.2), a few minor tears repaired in atlas, bindings slightly rubbed and scratched, atlas binding restored (text with a few repairs), all rebacked (and with new green and red morocco labels)

Catalogue Note

The official account of Lord Macartney's voyage and embassy to the Qianlong emperor in 1792-94. The text volumes in this set have wide margins and the set benefits from most of the plates being coloured.
