The work contains forty poems about the summer palace of Yuan ming yuan near Beijing written by the Qianlong Emperor, modelled on an earlier work by the Kangxi emperor about the Summer resort at Chengde. Each poem is accompanied by a foldout view depicting a scene at Yuan ming yuan.
