Description
- Dell' Arco Trajano In Benevento. Naples, 1770
- paper
Folio (487 x 365mm.), engraved throughout, pictorial title, 8 plates, contemporary carta rustica, [BAL RIBA 2310; Berlin Kat. 1896], first three leaves holed at upper margin, some dampstaining
Provenance
"J. Soan, Naples 1779" ink inscription on title; Soane added the "e" to his name in 1783 and seems to have added it to most of the ownership inscriptions on books still in his library, perhaps suggesting this book may have left his hands before that date
Catalogue Note
Sir John Soane's copy with his signature, annotations, and a small sketch. Soane spent time in Naples in 1779 and used the city as a base for excursions; he visited Benevento in the spring of that year and later recommended it to an anonymous friend in 1779/80, in a document transcribed in Pierre du Prey, John Soane's Architectural Education 1753-80, Appendix G, as "of wonderful execution".
