Catalogue Note

Rifaud spent many years in Egypt carrying out excavations for Bernardino Drovetti, the French consul. The work is unusual in that the plates are so highly varied in subject matter: many are of ethnological interest; there are also artefacts and natural history subjects.

The numbering of the plates is erratic and complex: the work was originally intended to comprise five volumes and some three hundred plates, but it was never completed. The present copy contains 211 plates, compared to Blackmer's 161.
