Description

  • Two autograph letters signed, to Sir John Lubbock, about Trojan excavations
noting the difference between the "Trojan cylinders of unbaked clay" (which he and Lubbock consider to be weavers' weights) and the terracotta coloured cones used as ornaments for Chaldean houses, describing the building material of Trojan houses ("...unburned bricks, which must necessarily have been dried in the sun and must have been laid on weeds and branches... Should you visit Troy, you will see in my excavations hundreds of such walls..."), and claiming that he and his wife "shall return to England after having excavated another Troy..."); in the second letter he asks for a copy of Lubbock's Ilios ("...I stand in great need of it for my present work on the results of my five months' explorations at Troy in 1882...") and promises to send an early copy of his new work as an exchange, 2 pages, 8vo and small 4to, Paris, 11 September 1875 and Athens, 6 March 1883, some staining, mounted on card
