Catalogue Note
Unique example of a composite atlas evidently assembled to order for a central or southern European purchaser in 1657. The core of the atlas originates from Gerard Mercator's Atlas of 1595, pre-dating 1636, when many of the plates were extensively re-engraved to reflect more contemporary decorative tastes; there are 22 Ortelius maps, mainly from the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, his modern world atlas, but also from the Parergon, an atlas of the classical world, and maps from Janssonius' classical atlas.
