2 volumes, folio (423 x 307mm.), 204 photographs (average 145 x 200mm., or the reverse), mounted on card, mostly two to a page, recto only, ink captions facing the photographs, each volume signed by Bois, contemporary brown half morocco, bookplate of F.W. Bois depicting his Colombo residence in each volume, some photographs fading at edges, some ink captions offset onto images, one volume with tears to spine ends, extremities heavily rubbed

Catalogue Note

Two albums of fine photographs by Frederic Bois (1848-1921), a keen amateur photographer, who lived in Ceylon and whose work was shown at the Paris Exhibition of 1900. The photographs include topographical views of Kandy and Colombo, colonial houses and family members, native dwellings and villages, portraits of Tamils, Singalese and Malay people, tea plantations and factories, a tailor, women sorting coffee, street views and archaeological studies including temples, bridges, religious sculptures and frescoes.
