Catalogue Note
A fine example of this rare wall map.
The map is a very loose copy of Nicolas de Fer's famous map of 1695. De Fer also influenced the work of Vincenzo Coronelli. Certainly in common with both the Coronelli-Nolin (post 1688) and the de Fer maps of the Americas, geographical errors are repeated, so that many of those found on de Fer's map occur here.
Very little is known of Paulo Petrini, the Neapolitan mapmaker, and much of his work appears to have been based on contemporary French mapping, notably the works of Guillaume Sanson and Nicolas de Fer. It is known that Petrini issued his wall maps in atlas form, in the little known Atlante partenopeo of c.1700 and 1718. The map is lavishly embellished with scenes, notably the vignette of the beavers of Canada and the cod-fisheries in Newfoundland (later to be used by Moll).
