Original canvas. There is a two inch oval patch to the reverse, upper left. The paint surface is dirty with a discoloured varnish. There are also stretcher marks visible across and to the sides of the canvas as well surface abrasions, notably to the left and right edges. There is an area of retouching visible to the naked eye that corresponds to the aforementioned patch, there is a fleck of paint loss to this retouching. There are areas of paint shrinkage and separation to the foreground between the sheep. Ultraviolet light reveals retouching in the aforementioned area, upper right, and suggestions of minor retouchings to frame abrasions; these are beneath the varnish which prevents a conclusive reading. Held in a plaster gilt frame in fair condition.
