Condition
Original canvas. The canvas undulates slightly in the upper left corner and there are three patches to the canvas, two in the lower left corner, measuring 5 by 2cm and 2 by .5cm respectively, and one in the centre of the canvas, measuring 2 by 2cm. There are stretcher bar marks about the edges and a few spots of minor craquelure scattered across the picture surface. There are some spots of paint shrinkage, including in the sky, to the hill in the background, to the baby, and to the foreground figure's smock. There is discolouration to the varnish in the sky.
Ultraviolet light reveals retouchings which correspond with the aforementioned patches. There are a few additional retouchings, including a small area near the centre of the lower edge, a small area along the centre of the right edge, flecks to the right of and above the foreground figure, a few flecks to the hill and trees, a few to the woman's face and hair, to the sky , to the baby's arm and dress, to the stile and beneath the stile.
