Condition

The canvas has been relined. There is some minor frame abrasion and a light stable craquelure pattern across the surface. There is some minor spots of bloom to the lower half of the work. There are a few flecked retouchings in the background which have apparently discoloured slightly. Ultraviolet light reveals a few flecked retouchings in the background, a few spots along the right edge, some flecks to the figure's hair, chest, collar and forearm, and a few small spots in the lower left quadrant. It is difficult to be conclusive about this retouching due to an uneven varnish which prevents an accurate reading. Held in a gilt plaster frame. Please telephone the department on 020 7293 6132 if you have any questions regarding the present work.
