The canvas is sound. There are two very small circular surface abrasions in the upper left corner and a very small surface indentation in the upper right quadrant. There are faint traces of craquelure in areas in all four quadrants. Under ultraviolet light there is retouching along the left and right-hand edges and to the windowsill and to the wall in the centre of the painting. There are also spots of retouching to the baby's head, the figure of the boy and sweeping areas of retouching in the lower left and lower right quadrants. There is also some infilling to the above mentioned craquelure, predominantly about the chest in the lower left quadrant. Held in a gilt plaster frame.
