Condition

The canvas has been heavily relined and the surface has been cleaned. There is some light craquelure to the wagon, but otherwise in good overall condition. Under ultraviolet light, there appears to be scattered flecks of retouching across all four quadrants; including a line of retouching running from the top to the bottom of the work in the right half of the picture. Catalogue Note

The present work is reminiscent of McTaggart's major work The Yarn of 1861.  The man leading the horse is modelled on the artist's father and the town in the distance is Campbeltown, Kintyre.
