Condition

The canvas has been relined. The paint surface is extremely dirty, with scattered spots of staining and a yellowed varnish throughout. There are also frame abrasions off the right border and traces of craquelure pattern along the horizon. Ultraviolet light reveals scattered spots of retouching in the trees upper right, and patches of retouching lower left. Also there are areas of retouching to frame abrasions along the lower border. Held in an ornate plaster gilt frame with some minor losses to the ornament. Please telephone the department on 020 7293 6132 if you have any questions regarding the present work.
