Catalogue Note

One of English literature's most quoted poems in a sumptuous binding from the Doves Bindery's first year of operation.

The first edition comprised 250 copies. Many include a manuscript correction to page 4 which is not present here. The original publication was largely ignored until brought to the attention of Rossetti and Swinburne.

Cobden-Sanderson was responsible for all design work at the newly established Doves Bindery. Marianne Tidcombe in The Doves Bindery identifies between fifty and sixty bindings from the firm's first year. This example corresponds to Tidcombe's design 41.
