8vo (227 x 136mm.), 2 volumes, first edition in English, wood-engraved frontispieces and 18 wood-engraved plates after Henry Valentin by Branston and others, original blue cloth stamped in blind, spines lettered and decorated in gilt, pale yellow endpapers, some slight spotting, very neat and skilful repairs to joints and hinges

A near fine copy in the original cloth of the first English edition of this classic tale.
Although slightly modified to take into account Victorian taste this remained the standard English translation of the novel until Penguin Classics published a new version by Robin Buss in 1996.
