Catalogue Note
A fine copy of the first edition in book form.
"The first numbers [of the periodical issue] of Vanity Fair were comparatively unsuccessful, but its popularity increased rapidly, and before the last parts appeared Thackeray's position as one of the foremost English novelists was assured. Before half of it had been published, Mrs Carlyle wrote to her husband: "He beats Dickens out of the world" " (Grolier Club, Catalogue of an exhibition commemorating... William Makepeace Thackeray).
