Catalogue Note

Writing just two days before his execution, Maximilian thanks the officers of his defeated army.

Besieged at Queretaro by the Juaristas, captured on 15 May 1867, he was court-martialled and, on 14 June, sentenced to death. Sometime during the four days before his execution on the 17th he composed this simple message to his loyal officers: "In these solemn moments I send you these words as proof of my recognition of the loyalty with which you have served me, as well as the sincere esteem that I feel for you."

Offered with a rare document signed by both the Emperor and Empress.
