Catalogue Note
Misbehavior of a general's son. With great regret, Robert E. Lee informs General George Devereux of misconduct on the part of his son: " . . . your Son was found absent from his qrs & Barrack a few nights since from about 12 til 1 Am. He was in Company with Cadet Amory, & they are reported to have had spirituous liquor in their possession when they returned." Lee notes the case is beyond his jurisdiction and has been reposted to the Secretary of War. He explains: "What may be his action or the result, of Course I cannot Say, but the demerit attached to the offense will cause that of your son to exceed 100." With great sympathy and sensitivity, Lee concludes: " I have hesitated to impart to you what I know will cause you much distress, & I now reluctantly do so, proceeding on the principle which I prefer in my own case, to know the worst that I may have the opportunity of doing what I can to remedy it."
