Document signed ("Gouv Morris"), one page, bifolium (9 1/8 x 7 1/2 in.; 232 x 190 mm), [Philadelphia], 8 August 1781, countersigned by Thomas McKean as Chief Justice of Pennsylvania, being his oath of office as assistant to the Superintendant of Finance of the U. S. Treasury; some toning on verso of blank leaf. Red cloth folding case, red morocco spine, 3 morocco lettering pieces.
Catalogue Note
A series of brilliant articles on Continental finances which Morris wrote for the Pennsylvania Packet in 1780 brought him an invitation a year later from Robert Morris, the newly created superintendant of finances, to serve in his department. He held this position between 1781 and 1785, with his most notable service being a plan for a decimal system of coinage, which was later perfected by Jefferson and Hamilton.
