Catalogue Note

Dunlap's effusive encomium of Washington."He was truly the Man, first in War—first in Peace—and first in the hearts of all mankind."  Former printer to the Continental Congress and veteran of the actions at Princeton and Trenton, John Dunlap forwards to General Charles Scott (now Governor of Connecticut) a copy of Ramsay's Life of Washington, which he had just published. He warmly describes Washington as "'the hero, the Patriot, the Sage of America—the Man in whom, in times of danger, every eye was turned, and all hopes were placed—The purity of his life and long series of services to his country rendered him illustrious through the world—the Prayers of his fellow Citizens, & brother Soldiers have been answered, he would have been immortal—He was truly the Man, first in War—first in Peace—and first in the hearts of all mankind—The darkness of the grave cannot obscure the brightness of Washington's great name."
