Catalogue Note
The Vaughan edition of Franklin's works, the only collection of his writings (apart from scientific pieces) printed in his lifetime. This edition has additional authority because the editor, Benjamin Vaughan, prepared the volume with Franklin's knowledge and assistance; Franklin even contributed the eight-page "Addenda & Corrigenda." Vaughan grouped the pieces into five divisions: general politics, American subjects before the present troubles, American subjects during the troubles, provincial politics, and miscellaneous and philosophical subjects. Many of the essays were first attributed to Franklin in this collection.
