L.Clemens | Mark Twain"), also signed by Clemens's official biographer Albert Bigelow Paine, 2 manuscript leaves from The Gilded Age (pp. 290 and 166) inserted in vol. 5, the first being in Clemens's hand, the second leaf (in faded purple ink) being in the hand of Clemens/s collaborator, Charles Dudley Warner, half-titles, title-pages printed in red and black with engraved vignette of a steamboat, 174 plates with captioned tissue guards, one full-page facsimile, facsimile note printed on verso of half-title in vol. 36; flyleaf in vol. 1 toned, offseting to verso of half-title in vol. 5, second manuscript leaf in vol. 5 very faded (but partially legible under black light); Full aubergine morocco lavishly panelled gilt, French filleted turn-ins, the spines in 5 compartments ornamented and stamped in gilt, top edges gilt, vol. 1 bound in reddish-brown morocco (similarly patterned but using different tools); lower cover of vol. 37, and spines faded to reddish-brown, a few joints lightly rubbed, lower cover of vol. 34 detached, 2 small scratches on upper cover of vol. 12.
