Inscribed albumen half-length portrait (9 x 7 in.; 230 x 180 mm), by Russell & Sons of London, mounted on heavy card edged in gilt, inscribed to Mr. Percy Spalding, a partner of Clemens's English publisher Chatto and Windus, signed ('S.L. Clemens") and dated 9 November 1899; upper margin of photograph sligthly abraded. Tan cloth folding case, tan morocco spine lettered gilt.

Inscribed to Percy Spalding, a partner of Clemens's English publisher, Chatto and Windus: "Mr. Percy Spalding — with the kindest regards of S. L. Clemens." Spalding had become a partner in 1876, the same year that Chatto and Windus published The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.
