A group of three letters and one manuscript note, chiefly related to Clemens's lecturing activities.
Autograph letter signed ("Mark Twain"), 2 pages on one leaf of Express Printing Company stationery, Buffalo, 1 September 1869, to "F. C." (Alphonse M. Griswold), explaining that he has temporarily withdrawn from lecturing but had he received his letter a week sooner, he would have remained on the lecture circuit and helped Griswold talk; some light soiling, one cellotape repair to a short fold tear, remnants of a mount on verso. — Autograph letter signed ("Mark Twain"), 2 pages on monogrammed stationery, Hartford, 3 May [? mid-1870s], to the editor of the Hartford Independent, requesting a poem by Massachusetts poet Caroline A. Mason, which was published in the paper and which Clemens wanted to read at an upcoming charity benefit. — Autograph note signed ("S.L. Clemens | Mark Twain"), one page, Elmira, 5 August 1884, to an unknown recipient, apologizing for "this rag of paper," explaining that he is cruising in strange waters where paper is scarce; remnants of glue mounts on verso. — Autograph manuscript, n.p., n.d., [New York, 11 January 1908], entitled "Little Montana Girl's Compliment," read in a speech delivered at the Lotos Club, 11 January 1908: "She was gazing thoughtfully at a photograph of Mark Twain on a neighbor's mantelpiece. Presently she said, reverently, 'We've got a Jesus like that at home, only ours as more trimmings'"; light toning.
