Catalogue Note

An attractive literary association, as Norris thanks the son of Nathaniel Hawthorne for a sympathetic notice of the first volume in his projected trilogy, The Epic of the Wheat. "May I take the liberty of thanking you most cordially and heartily for your kind and extremely discriminating review of The Octopus in the North American. It is very rare that one's idea is caught so readily and accurately, and, being a writer yourself, you will understand how grateful the circumstance is to me." Norris died at 32, and his letters are very uncommon.
