Sent by Thomas Lefroy, Baron of the Exchequer, to his wife Mary Paul whom he had married in 1799. Prior to marriage, Lefroy had a flirtation with Jane Austen to the extent that he has been promoted as the Mr Darcy in Pride and Prejudice, which Jane wrote during the period of their relationship. Lefroy's standing as 'Mr Darcy' has substance for Jane wrote on 9 January 1796 - "At length the day is come on which I am to flirt my last with Tom Lefroy, and when you receive this it will be over. My tears flow as I write at the melancholy idea."
