a superb watercolour all-over sketch by Reginald Linstead on an envelope sent from London to Burnley 8 January 1880, franked with the 1d. Venetian red EJ, S.G.K3, tied by the London numeral 'W/19' cancellation in black, circular framed 'F' Inspector"s mark confirming the envelope could be carried through the mails even though the address panel was so small, London code 'D 2' duplex of despatch on the reverse, Burnley code 'A' arrival the following day, a few faults. AN EXQUISITE ITEM.
The envelope was painted by Reginald Linstead and sent to a fellow watercolourist, the Reverend A.T. Gill. The original letter, in which Linstead congratulates Gill on his recent marriage, is enclosed. Gill"s own two sons became famous artists. Eric was a sculptor, postage stamp designer and originator of the Gill printing typeface named after him. His other son, Evan, became a prominent philatelist and collector of Papua.
