A pair of George III grey-painted and parcel-gilt armchairs CIRCA 1780

each serpentine backrest above an overupholstered serpentine seat flanked by padded armrests painted with interlaced laurel leaves, raised on tapering fluted legs ending in cuffed feet.  Decoration restored.

Overall good restored condition; redecorated; later corner blocks to front rails; chips and losses to later painted decoration; rubbing to hand holds; later gilding to legs. The first with repaired break to front left foot; back legs with replaced brackets and repairs at tops. The other with replacement to toe and collar of front right foot; back legs with old repairs to tops at joins with seat rails.

Knopf, 1996, writes 'The rooms in the Trees' town house, including the drawing room, were decorated by Nancy in 1928.  "I think one was influenced by the fact that all houses when I was growing up were overdone and overarranged", she said... "I put a long sofa I had made that was covered in light brown satin.  I took the wavy shape for the front of the sofa from a set of set of four beautiful 18^th century chairs I bought." '   The present  pair of armchairs appears to be from the set of four chairs illustrated, op. cit., p. 287.
