Catalogue Note

The form of the pelta backrest, derived from the Roman symbol of war, is found in related hall furniture, including a pair of hall seats and four hall chairs at The Lady Lever Art Gallery and illustrated, Lucy Wood, The Upholstered Furniture in the Lady Lever Art Gallery, New Haven: Yale University Press, 2008, vol. II, pp. 783-792, i 74B, figs. 479-480, i 75B.  As Wood discusses, op. cit., the 'the pelta...became particularly fashionable in the early 19th century, perhaps reflecting the national mood in the wake of the Napoleonic Wars.'

A related pair of hall chairs was sold, Christie's London, April 11, 1985, lot 106; another pair was sold, Christie's London, October 6, 1983, lot 18.
