A fine Regency burr yewwood, satinwood, elm and parcel-gilt sofa table Circa 1800

the crossbanded rectangular top and flaps above two cedar-lined frieze drawers opposed by dummy drawers, the lyre-shaped supports joined by concave-sided and turned stretchers, raised on animal-paw feet.  Restored, later gilded.

Veneered on mahogany; restored condition; the top with age cracks to veneers along lines of construction beneath including to the middle and diagonal age cracks to flaps; left side of top with an age crack to veneer following an age crack to mahogany underside ; lifting to crossbanded borders and with inpainting; drawer knobs appear to be original; age cracks to drawer bottoms; later gilded with losses and rubbing to gilding; appear to be traces of green or black paint below the gilding of the feet; back right foot with crack and losses to foot surrounding the caster; repairs to 'strings' of lyres; repairs to the stretcher; originally the gilded areas were possibly painted black or green; losses to line inlay.

The present table is very similar to a Pembroke table with lyre-shaped supports and an almost identical stretcher from the Collection of Robert Tritton, illustrated, Macquoid and Edwards, The Dictionary of English Furniture, vol. III, p. 268, fig. 11.

Related tables with similar framework stretchers were sold at Sotheby's London, July 12, 1991, lot 147, November 18, 1994, lot 164, November 29, 2002, lot 99 and at Christie's London, November 12, 1988 and April 22, 2004, lot 112. A pianoforte in the form of a sofa table at Ham House made by John Broadwood and Sons in 1801 with very similar concave-sided stretchers is illustrated, The Journal of the Furniture History Society, 1980, vol. XVI, 'The Furnishing and Decoration of Ham House,' fig. 193. Another writing table with similar pierced stretcher was sold, Christie's London, Longleat, June 13, 2002, lot 364.  One of a pair from Norman Adams that was once in the collection of the Earls of Shaftesbury at St. Giles's House, Dorset, was sold in these rooms, October 16, 2008, lot 147.
