the later 4-inch white enameled dial with Roman and Arabic numerals enclosed by ribbon-tied and tasseled garlands, signed Barancourt à Paris, indicated by jeweled pierced hands set before a key-wind chiming mechanism in a leaf-cast drum case surmounted by a covered urn with pineapple finial; the movement signed Fortin à Paris.

Slight wear to patination and ormolu, some lacking to cut steel insets. Enameled plaque at base with some rubbing. In overall good condition.

A clock of this model, lacking the brilliants and enameled plaques, is illustrated, Tardy, French Clocks, Part Two, Paris, 1981, p. 16. The design relates to the model of lion clock attributed to François Vion, the drawing for which is in the Bibliotheque Doucet, Paris (see H. Ottomeyer / P. Prôschel et al, Vergoldete Bronzen, Munich, 1986, Vol. I, figs. 3.11.4 and 3.11.6).
