Catalogue Note
Gerard de Jode's Speculum orbis terrarum was first published in 1578, but was not a financial success. Nonetheless, Gerard and his son Cornelis planned a second edition, begun about 1589, for which this new map of the world was prepared. A note in the lower corner says that the map was "perfected" - drawn - by Cornelis de "Iudoejs" while studying at the Academy of Douai, on 29 November 1589, and published by his father.
Gerard died in 1591, and it was left to his widow and son - "viduae et Heredu[m] Gerardi de Iudaeis" - to publish the atlas, containing this map of the world on Marinus of Tyre's rectangular projection, and a second map on a double polar projection, also compiled by Cornelis (see lot 28).
Unfortunately, although this second edition was in many ways superior to Ortelius' rival publication, sales were again poor, hence the relative scarcity of this fine map of the world.
