Catalogue Note
The realism in the portraiture demonstrates the influence of the Company School on artists working in regional courts in North India during this period.
Compare the present lot with a portrait of a courtesan in the Paul Walter Collection; Sotheby's New York, November 14, 2002, lot 54. The rich and elaborate jewelry represented on both subjects indicates the luxurious and opulent lifestyle enjoyed by courtesans during the nineteenth century.
