Catalogue Note
This rare picchavai depicts the romance of Krishna and his consort Radha, in the fluvial setting of lotus ponds on the banks of the River Yamuna during the summer months. Krishna is adorned with light summer garments, and he embraces his consort who meets his loving gaze. The characteristic blue ground is evocative of the river which is alive with lotus flowers, bees and butterflies. Such picchavais are used for ritual display during the summer months.
