Catalogue Note

Mikhail Ivanov Dikariov is one of the most famous Russian icon painters of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He owned a major icon workshop in Moscow and was one of the favourite icon painters of Emperor Nicholas II and Empress Alexandra. The highly refined painting and the skillful technique of the present icon indicate that it was painted by Dikariev himself or by a member of his workshop. Especially noticeable are the multicoloured background and the brilliant painting of the military dresses with the alternating use of gold, decorated with intricate floral patterns drawn with fine black lines.
