Catalogue Note

In the mid 19th century, the number of private factories in Russia approached sixty.  Porcelain artists were constantly seeking new stylistic trends and looked towards the east for inspiration. Interestingly, for copying designs the artists used European examples produced in the 18th century and not the originals.
Several comparable objects previously in the collection of Grand Duke Nikolai Nikolaevich the younger (1856-1929) and now in the collection of the State Russian Museum were produced by the Batenin factory in the 1830s.
