Description

  • Tempera on wood panel, gilded silver, silver, enamel
  • 36.5 by 31cm, 12 by 10 1/2 in.
depicting the bishop standing at full length before the open Holy Doors of an iconostasis, to his right an icon of the Mother of God "Unexpected Happiness," and to his left an icon of the Holy Visage, the silver gilt oklad repoussé and chased, also applied with brightly-coloured enamel columns simulating those on either side of the Holy Doors, the bishop's robes in silver filigree and his halo in cloisonné enamel, struck with maker's mark G.S. (Cyrillic), possibly for Grigori Sbitnev
