Description

holding the gospel and giving a blessing towards the tree at centre, beside a figure holding an axe, a black devil jumping out of the well

Condition

The icon has been inserted into another panel in the 19th century. The border has been regilded. The face of the man with the axe has been repainted. Overall good condition.

Catalogue Note

The bright colours on a gold ground, the sharply contrasting highlights in dark grey-blue on the mantle of St Nicholas, and the stylistic treatment of the rocks suggest that the icon was painted in the Pskov area.
