Catalogue Note

Norbert Michael Schrödl was born near Vienna and received a somewhat sporadic and informal art education by travelling to Venice and working in Dresden.  He moved to Russia in 1849 and, until 1853, worked in St Petersburg, Moscow and Warsaw.  Although Schrödl is most recognised for his work as a sculptor, he was also an accomplished ivory carver and portrait artist.
The present lot depicts Emperor Nicholas I dressed in military uniform before the start of the Crimean War of 1853-1856.
