1929, after a design by Simon Lissim
The present lot was modelled in 1929 after Simon Lissim's sketch for the character Basovriuk, a fiend in Cossack dress, from the ballet adapted from Gogol's best short stories. Born in Kiev in 1900, Lissim was a well-known figure in the theatrical world, working as a studio assistant to Leon Bakst and enjoying a close friendship with Alexandra Exter. Though mostly self-taught, he attended Reiman's art school in Berlin, as well as the National School of Decorative Art in Paris.
