Condition

Wear consistent with age and use within the culture. Vertical cracks to the back. Hqirline crack to the front, hole to the left-hand side of the face, visible in the catalogue illustration.

Catalogue Note

Le personnage adopte la position classique de la statuaire Abelam : debout sur des jambes fléchies, torse bombé aux épaules étroites projetées vers l'avant, les mains posées de part et d'autre de l'abdomen. Le long visage est marqué par un nez étiré caractéristique, et auréolé d'une barbe et d'une coiffe sculptée en relief, cette dernière surmontée du motif emblématique des têtes jumelles de calao stylisé ; l'ensemble rehaussé des pigments traditionnels - noirs, rouges et jaunes - utilisés par les Abelam. Provenant probablement d'un élément de décor architectural, ce type de statue représenterait l'esprit des ancêtres, ngwaalndu (Coupaye in Peltier, 2006, n° 20).
