Avec une grande délicatesse, les membres libérés s'étirent en courbes et contre-courbes, pour venir encadrer le buste longiligne. A l'élaboration des motifs ornementaux et des supports aux têtes d'oiseaux stylisés, répond la puissance de l'expression - yeux ronds, bouche s'étirant d'une oreille à l'autre, projection reliant le menton à la poitrine. Bois d'ébène rehaussé de chaux.

Harry Beran (1996 : 199 et 2000 : 28) rapporte que cette projection, présente sur de nombreuses spatules et mortiers anthropomorphes des Massim, a été interprétée par un Trobriandais comme le mucus expulsé de la bouche d'un sorcier au moment de sa mort.
