Catalogue Note
The present lot is a copy of Portrait d'une négresse by Marie-Guillemine Benoist, Paris 1768-1826, exhibited in the Salon of 1800. This portrait, now in the collection of the Louvre, was painted six years after slavery was abolished in France, and became a symbol of emancipation and human rights.
